Well, like all the other weeks, we're reviewing Utopia. There were barely any entries this week, but hey, this isn't the Phoenix Force's Twitter. It won't be telepathically updated every nanosecond. Please Jean, make me proud and get a life.

Or, join me in banging my head against the wall (cosmic ones work, too; we don't discriminate) at Matt Fraction's latest piece of...well, I'm above insulting the good name of literature.

Honestly, I have no idea what happened between Utopia #1 and this mess. Yes, the previous issues were slow, but slow didn't mean horrible. Veering on mediocre, okay, but they weren't bad. Or, at least, not this bad.

First off, I'm skipping over what happened in the previews. It's some pretty boring stuff nothing particularly worth mentioning.

A little after that, though, we've got this scene of Weapon Omega (obviously Captain Underpants was handing out codenames that day)
absorbing some sort of energy from Dark Beast torturing Hank-Beast.
Usually, I wouldn't have a problem with such a scene. It's necessary for the story. Read and move on. But....

What is this, Sebastian Shaw's college sex tape? Fraction has a chance to do something cute or funny with the dialogue here, something to show just how off the deep end DB and Omega are, but he passes up the chance for a bunch of hisses and passes that sound like they belong in a bad fanfiction. Ugh.

If you've been following along with Utopia (or at least this blog's reviews)
Then you probably remember Perv! Scott's plan to get Mindee/Irma/Cuckoo #3 (now I sound like a bad fanfiction) arrested. Why? More appropriately, Why Else?
I'm somewhat proud of what's-her-name here. Before we proceed with the review, let's just say those are the most original lines of the issue.

Okay, um, where are we....ah, here. The grand conclusion of Emma Frost's job as a playground supervisor.

The lesson? Corporal Punishment always wins. Especially if you're coffee deprived and weigh over four hundred pounds in diamond.

Of Course she did, you friggin' rip-off. Emma was actually very true to character there. Shame the only times that happens involve four words and a grunt-y thing.

Um, actually, she's kind of okay on the next page. There's even a tiny reference to "Runaways" for Cloak and Dagger, who have been the most vocal members of the team.

Wanna know a secret about Emma? She's not evil. Never was. I hate having my intelligence insulted like this.

So she was working on the inside? Yup, congrats on learning how to read.
What I don't understand is why. There really wasn't a reason to have her there. Considering what Scott ended up doing, it wasn't necessary to have public approval of anybody at all. Speaking of which, Scott Summers sure isn't getting my valuable mutant vote.
Scott, you're the lamest leader ever. You don't just throw in the towel like that. You stand and deliver. You earn our trust and approval. You show mutants all over the world there is a chance, there is some hope. Of course, you've failed at all of the above, so, uh...where'd you guys move again? I'm thinking I'll send a card or...a pie, something.

Ah, yes, another giant island separatist nation. I'm just gonna say one thing, Scotty. Genosha. It worked so well, I guess you should've cashed in on your own giant island earlier. Before the nukes, I mean.

But hey, the death toll can only go up to about 200, right? Safer than Mexico. Plus, I'm sure that the producers of Wolverine and the X-Men love the free ad for animated Genosha (Greg Land is not a ROLE MODEL you mutie freak).

THIS IS SO BAD

Ahem, okay. So after that raining storm of predictability, well, the issue is over. We finish with a little half page where Iron Patriot asks Daken and Hawkeye (Bullseye?)do do something very important...

Yes, he's sending two psychopaths to go grab him a can of tuna and a wedding ring. Scratch what I said about fraction passing up a chance for some nice dialogue. It's quite an improvement when people keep their mouths shut.

Art-wise, the book is solid. The art's not bad, but it's not good, either. There's little inconsistencies and small parts that just look wrong, but I can live with that. It isn't Land. My eyes aren't bleeding, so it's okay.

Overall, the issue made me feel like I was reading a Fairy Tale by a below-average middle schooler. Nothing happened that you couldn't see coming from a mile away. The dialogue is...***facepalms*** and the important parts of the plot Fraction set up in Utopia #1 are completely abandoned. The folder, Mystique, Scott vs. Emma...on their way to the Marvel Universe "Plot Devices for 2014" bin.

Bottom line, it was horrible. Not worth $3.99, not even worth the 50 cents of the old days. Bad Bad Bad. Get Fraction off this book now, and put him back on the indie circuit, where his stuff was good and he didn't look so stupid.

Something must be wrong with me.

Welcome to Chibistomb's UTOPIA PART FOUR REVEIW! YAY! WE KNOW NOTHING ELSE GETE REVEIWED! WHHHHHOOOO!

Ever Since Birds of Prey Died, Uncanny is my default Yay book. Deal with it, please.

Anyway, on to the reveiw. Uncanny #514 is a fairly so-so issue. It take the story where you wholly expect it to go, has good, not Land, not phenomenal artwork, and the same level of characterization and dialouge. In those terms, it's nothing special.

What is special though, is Matt Fraction's attempts to make it so, which rate so high on the fail-meter you actually do laugh.

A majority of the issue...is um...well...okay, so you know how some stuff sounds good in your head but not in real life? Um....from now on that will be reffered to as "Uncanny 514".

First of all, it you do not get the following joke, please wikipedia "Stepford Cuckoos" and come back. Oh, and as a side note, the Spice Girls movie was on last night.

Well, it seems the blog's died again. Crap, so I'm gonna have to drive through the soggy Bran-Flakes streets of this city, past the TREE in half the cars on the street, and go to the Cheap Plot Device shop.

Twenty-three minuites, fifty bucks, and one "Pointless Ressurection that will in no doubt be forgotten and written over in two years", Chibistomb is back!

Maybe I'm stretching the truth a bit with the Cheap Plot Device Shop (although the exodus of comics writers to Calgary wouldn't hurt our tourism ratings), but I am NOT lying about the weather. Last week, I came back from a camping trip and lazed around for a couple days, woke up in the middle of the night while the entire country was in the middle of one of those "WHOTHEHELLSTOLEMYCOFFEE!!" Storm rants. It was freaking awsome. But oh, yeah, some tree got blown over into a guys car. Also, power lines down and such. But it's August and we look like a bad Muir Island establishing shot. Not even a single ray of sunshine. All we need now is a bunch of guys in kilts with their kids in those tall rain boots to make Canada the most northern territory of Scotland. Oh, wait. *sigh*

Ah well, at least the comics shop didn't get rained in. Unlike certain things. Read-The Basement.

If this keeps up, chibistomb will have more not-really-deaths than Jean Grey.....but still no money for them.

He's making soundtracks for himself at camp, and it sounds like a cool thing to do.

What you do is pick some songs that you like and put them
on a cd, so you have a soundtrack for yourself. You can also sing, if you're good at it.

Also, you can make your a soundtrack for movies and books like comics.

#5-Tiny Titans #18

I've gone on about the perfectness of Tiny Titans, right? Well, just in time for summer breaks in the real world, they're stuck in detention while Darksied is doing slade's dirty work, which we can safely assume (this being an all ages book and all) will bw cleaning off bathroom graffiti by Ravager. Oh, Red Robin also manages to make a semi-racist remark on the cover. Bwahahahaha! Hurray for Wonder Bread and blind censors!

#4-Amazing Spider-Man # 600

Why are so many titles getting up to #600 recently? I remember Cap just hit his, like a week ago. Oh well. Anyway, this is Spidey's, a whole 104 pages all to himself, with (promised) no reprints and work by guys like Romita Jr., Joe Kelly, Marcos Martin (the Batgirl: Year One guy), and Stan Lee (no, duh), it looks to be something even Peter himself will be swinging in to get.

#3- Marvel Adventures Spider-Man# 53-

Two Spidey Titles? In a row? Why, yes, of course. Anyway, this the all ages Spidey Title in the non-616 Marvel Adventures line, which really does look like it'll be quite an adventure....to say the least. I'll let the preveiw speak for itself.

#2-Marvel 1985

Face it, we all sometimes wish we could've a "Toby". That's why this thing exsists, and why this magical, imaginative, and entirely possible story makes #2.

#1- Absolute New Frontier

Okay, I admit it. I'm a terrible geek. I preordered my Itunes copy of Watchmen, yeah, but you know what? I haven't even read Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier. That's right. *sigh* But I do plan to. I've heard some awesome things about the book, so hopefully, it's place at #1 is deserved.

The Huntress Approved Guide to Comics Budgeting!

Yeah, yeah, it's the absolutely inevitable money-economy-ZOMG! WALL STREET SCUCIDE! post. Well, you people do need to save for the future. But this isn't a lifestyle blog, so I won't waste my time telling you to turn you car off at stoplights or start wearing hand-me-downs from that old box that says "Deeded to the museum". Instead, chibistomb presents The Huntress Approved Guide to Comics Budgeting!

Okay, now that's overwith, let's get on to the actual money-economy-ZOMG! WALL STREET SCUCIDE! post. Right.

First of all, this post is about comics budgeting, So duh, set a budget. That's the amount of money you actually plan to spend on comics monthly or weekly, depending on how many times you get 'em. Saying "Oh, okay, so I'll spend thirty bucks on comics. Easy. Thanks!" is gonna work about as well as Emma Frost saying "Oh, okay, so I'll dress like a nun now! Thanks!"

It's just not going to happen.

The easiest way to do this is just to find out how much you currently spend on comics, and see what you can live without. Like, if you're buying a monthly that you've hated since Febuary and the creative team is set to stay on until next March, you can probably drop it and get the trade later if something great happens in the next few months.

That's another option, too. Trades are like, the Misfit of your LCS. They're that awesome. Not only are they comparably cheap, between $13.99 for low-impact story arcs, all ages books, and indies to $27.99 for stuff like Messiah CompleX and Volumes 1 & 2 of 52 as a special price. In a word, just think of twenty-four-ish event issues for thirty bucks. Yeah, and that's $30 Canadian, even less in US Dollars.

However, don't just look in Comic Shops for Trades. If your local library has a clearout book sale, you can find trades of Sandman, Swamp Thing, and Watchmen for about $1.50 or 50 cents, depending on if they are listed as teen graphic novels or adult ones. Bookstores like Borders or Chapters also sell trades, which sometimes are cheaper than the shop. They also usually have huge (like 12 copies huge) stocks of the stuff that sells right out at the LCS, like all the trades of Whedon's Astonishing X-Men.

That's the other thing. With trades, there's no monthly delays and and you won't have to reread issue from Part One in May to get with Part Four in September.

Again, if you still want to collect the monthlies, don't get ones you know you'll hate, no matter how much the other geeks love it. If you hate superhero stuff, don't buy Utopia just because I review it all the time. Find the stuff you like and get that.

Also, try not to "pull-box" unless you know you're getting a book or issue that is guaranteed to sell out. Instead, look around the shop, read reveiws on the internet, or ask a fellow geek to find out what's good. If you regularly read Uncanny, but have heard this month's issue equals cow patties, go to the shop, flip through the shelf copies, and if you agree, get something else with your $4.99.

Of course, you don't always need to stick to your budget. Say you get a raise, or that four hundred dollars back from that college buddy. Yeah, go ahead, blow it. I'm not your mother, sheesh!

Emma's New Job....

Okay, Utopia Part 3 in Dark Avengers #7. Wow. Fraction's dropped the ball like he's a five-year-old going bowling for the first time. Seriously, did the guy have bad Starbucks or something? He's an entirely different writer here, and God, the results are just.....well, let's pretend you rode the teacup ride twelve times on a full stomach. Yeah.

The issue can be neatly summed up in one word, anticlimatic. Oh, oh, and you know the best part? The Dark Avengers are sitting in Norman's living room, whining about the Dark X-Men, who then come back from beating up Hellion and his crew in Union Sqaure. Then this happens:

Bwahahahahahaha! Froget being a lawyer. If Emma gets kicked off the X-men, she can always find work as a Playground Supervisor. *cue eye rolls*

No, but didn't Wonder Woman work at Taco Bell at some point? Way to tell kids to go to college.

Hot Cover Post- Dark Avengers #7

Hi Everybody, yeah I'm still around. This week I'm writing about the cover to Dark Avengers #7, which is drawn by Mike Deodato and he also does everything but write, Matt Fraction is writing and rainer Beredo is coloring.

These Guys all have cool names!

I really like how they made this cover, because they make the bad guys look really big and the good guys look small, like how it seems when superheroes are fighting bad guys. Norman Osborn standing over Emma Frost also lookes really nice. She looks like a witch who is putting together a spell and Norman looks like he really wants it to work. Emma's hands look weird and she seems really tired though. Also, Norman looks like he put braids in his hair. WHY WOULD HE DO THAT?

I know some of the small characters, but I don't know who the guy on top of angel is or who the guy in blue and purple is. The others are Professor X, Cloak and Dagger (they're from Runaways) Wolverine, Venom, Ares, Ms.Marvel, Angel, and centry. I think the guy with the power beams is Havok but he looks really lame in that costume.

I would give this cover a 4 out of 5 because I like it but it's kind of dark and also gets boring if you look at a lot.

I think I will get this comic when I go to the comic store because it looks interesting and it is part of Utopia, which happens in San Fransisco, so I can see if they drew in any places I know and my brother also said the other comics in Utopia are good so this will probaby be a good story.

I'm taking a little break from comic posts today, because 1)I promised not to reveiw anything "X" this week, 2)The scanner has crashed?overheaded? frozen? regardless, isn't working, 3)to introduce a new part of the blog, and 4) Canada's second season July/August (comes right after WINTER) has officially kicked off!Well, it isn't raining, snowing, hailing, frosting, or heatwave..ing. Therefore, it must be July/August!

To celebrate, chibistomb2 is posting a few junky, sugary, not fat-free or enviornomentally-friendly summer treat recipies (with a comic twist, of course!)! I'll try to get in a couple every little while, and ask Carson (The Guest Blogger!) to put some in too. That kid sucks. He gets to live SOMEWHERE HOT!>>! Try at your own risk.

Personally, I don't read Green Lantern, or any of it's spin-off titles, so I may have some of the canon reference stuff below wrong, but you people (who read the title) can fix it yourselves.

Anyways, you're gonna need-

5 packages of unsweetened KoolAid drink mix, Green, Red, Blue, Yellow, Pink, (Orange or Purple instead of one of the above works too)
2 cups of water
1/2 - 3/4 cup sugar (I said sugary!)
4 cups ice

and you're gonna need to-

Divide each KoolAid package into fifths (like, a spoonful out of each package works) and combine the different flavours in a bag or bowl.

Dump it in the blender with the water and sugar. Then, blend it (um, it's called a blender, duh!) Add in the ice and blend some more.

Then you can drink it...but, not while it's blending, okay? I don't have a lot of money as is. This is me trying to avoid getting sued.

While you're drinking, try to pick out which Lantern Corps colors you've got in there anyway. Or use the cup as your scorecard when you're reading the book. Hey, I needed a scorecard to keep track of Birds of Prey in that arc where Spy Smasher sent them to Russia. It's nothing to feel un-fanboy/girlish about.

Decided to go with a nice, fluffy, all ages book for this week's #1.
I recently read some of the back issues we've got lying around the house (like I said, geek family), and this series is actually surprisingly realistic. I mean, we all imagined this stuff in the eighth grade. Can't stop laughing at DC editorials use of "frenimies" though.

Uncanny X-Men #513/Utopia Part 2 REVEIW!!

Hey, it's been a while since this blog had a reveiw right? Can't remember...oh, yeah, I did one for Utopia Part One. Sheesh, okay, I'll reveiw something else next week!

Anyway, this is San Fransisco post-riot frenzy. The issue stays comparatively toned down, with the conflict more bubbling just under the surface than in a full rolling boil like Part One. However, we do get one not- quite-so-big reveal that wraps up the little thread of "two Professor X's". I didn't see it, but for God's sake! Was that my Stupid Day or something? Yeah, I'll bet this blog DOES NOT run on brainpower.

Afterwards, the DX have a scheduled press conference, again sticking to the strategy of taking over the public consciousness by way of digital media, like the TV, but considering, they're probably all over Norman's Youtube and Emma's Twitter by now.

I have a liking for this plot point, in that one of the DX's main (greatest) weapons is the twisty and hype-loving media. I mean, you can have a hundred Wolverines and it don't mean nothing if nobody cares.
It also adds realism to the story. If someone really were to pull a Norman Osborn in this present Universe (the one you're in!) they not only would use the media to sway people, but also recognize the power it has.

Especially the power to fire people up. Especially these people, who are already beat-up and pissed as all hell. So what's to do when you've got nothing better to do? Take a tip from these guys and set fire to Union Square. One of those thing to do at twenty-something you really go "Was it the beer or the ex?" afterwards.

And there's Emma being all Law and Order. God, she does look a little bit like one of the lawyers, sorry, District Attorneys on that show, doesn't she?
Maybe no cape, but hey, if this whole thing falls through on her, she and Kate Spencer can always get together and kick ass elsewhere.

The last panel teases at a confrontation between Norman and Scott, which I actually do get was inevitable. You know Summers has his fight on when he grows his famous superstubble. Yeah, those secondary mutations suck, man.

Overall, this was something of a filler issue. Nothing world-shattering, and not nearly as hit-and-run as #1, but serving more as a bridge between the current situation, and when it boils over, in the next issues. It's not as necessary as #1, and internet snooping should have you all filled in on the issue, but if you're a completist or buy Uncanny regardless, it's not a waste at all.

At least that's what I thought when I heard the Runaways "Theme Song" (http://marvel.com/videos/746.The_Runaways_Theme_Song_Music_Video)

Ahem, how do I put this lightly...70's-ish Bon Jovi-style rock...but more early-Weezer style, with the kind of little riffs and bits the Jonas Brothers or Marianas Trench might use. Plus, the repitition of the word "Parents" in this Rolling Stones-ish way is funny in the way an overweight fanboy chasing Bendis is. You're not supposed to laugh...but...

The lyrics are so obviously geek-written, but it's not really that bad when you think about it. I mean there's writing a theme song, then there's writing a Theme Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ywwmGyi9TQ) This is nothing like that, thankfully.

Still I always thought a Runaways theme song would sound different than this. How? I dunno. Just less....road trip with Dad's old CD's riding into the Nevada sunset....

Between deciding which meat to buy for tonight's backyard grill-fest and which mosquito repellent actually works, I've been thinking. What if Gail Simone wrote Uncanny X-Men?

Let me state my case. I love Gail. She can write flagship characters (Wonder Woman, anyone) and she can write secretive characters on the brink (forget the pun). And we'd get more lines like this-

It reminds me of those old Birds of Prey back issues. Dinah and Babs, and Helena. Whole lotta back and forth. Great reading for lazy summer afternoons...

See, this is why they need to bring back Birds of Prey RIGHT NOW. The Oracle mini was full of more crap than a campground outhouse, and nobody's really being used now. Plus, Black Alice got a role in the larger DCU, and Misfit didn't. It's like killing off Klara to bring back Gert. Oh, wait...

Forget Life. COMICS ARE SO NOT FAIR.

Hulk on Utopia: HULK HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH BAY AREA!!

For once, lots of stuff gets smashed and bashed, and there is no way we can blame Hulk (or the Shi'ar, or the Sentinels, or Transformers, or robots, etc.) for it. In fact, in the first chapter of Utopia (Dark Avengers/X-Men- #1) it all comes down to that pesky bit of human nature known as "We're better than you, we're the ones who are right, so you can either side with us or pay" (which incidentally, is also the cause of about a couple hundred non-fictional conflicts at the moment), which is what turns SanFran into a chaotic semi-war zone a la No Man's Land where emotions run high and seem to eclipse any and all intelligence. See the live riot footage below.

A lot of the issue continiues along the same vein, riot, riot, riot, and corresponding media reports. However, this hit-after-hit pace adds the realism of immediate, jostling, chaos, and it feels just like you're there, and this is your town going to the dogs. Points for Fraction.

This town though, belongs to Sadie Sinclair, aka the Mayor. And it'sreally, really, not the type of thing you want on a tourism brochure. I've been iffy about her since she was introduced in Uncanny. I mean, is this lady completely clueless, or is she just someone who meant well and bit off more than they could chew? Because inviting the X-men to your city and basically standing by while they tear away your roads and your reputation hardly seems like a safe or justified move. Perhaps she's going for neither....

After more rioting, Norman Osborn declares martial law and send in (ooooooo!) The Dark Avengers, but I won't get too into that, as nothing too unpredictable nor world-shattering happens. The fans of Emma Frost (I and this blog included) will be happy to know she's got an absolutely crackling sub-plot in this issue, which i just can't wait to see expand. I enjoy her moral ambuguity and really want to know just what she's eyeballs deep in. Oh, Emma.

If that wasn't enough for you, by the very last page, you're treated to four huge reveals, one per panel, that right then completely change the X-Men. Yeah, right in those four panels, quite a lot of canon and expectations are just shattered like the windows on most of the city's shops. Bye-Bye predictability.

I'll say the same thing as I said in the top five. If you've got the cash, you gottta get this issue. If you haven't, it really is too bad. Fraction is at the top of his game here, and it reads better than some of his Uncanny work. The entire story is breathless, frantic, and dizzy, racing against itself to the finish, and delivering blow by blow on the way. Yeah, I've made it sound horrible, but that kind of pace works for this story, and I can't imagine it any slower. What needs to be said and done is, with little to add and nothing to take away.

#5-GOTHAM CITY SIRENS #1

This is basically the Gotham Girls web-series in comic form, featuring Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn in what look to be considerably more light-hearted misadventures in Bat City post-RIP. The big sell here is that Paul Dini, with his anything Bat-related Midas touch, is writing, which should promise a high-action, funny, top shelf take on Batman's "Bad Girls". Worth at least a passing glance, though i'm not sure if DC soliciting it up to September means a good thing ou thumbs way down, especially whn you read the summaries.

#4- All Star Batman and Robin Volume One

Boasting enough "Goddamn"'s to make you ask a junkie if he's Batman, All-Star Batman and his all Star creative team come swinging in on the softcover reprint of ASBAR's first nine issues. This series is part of the DC All-Star line (aka Ultimate DC) so the characters are a little bit different (note Black Canary) but the core plot devices of Batman stay the same, making this one of those books that s really written (and drawn...ah, Jim Lee) for the fans. If you've already got the hardcover, why bother getting the softcover, but if you haven't, than pick up this sweet trade for about 20 bucks.

#3- Runaways #11

The start of the "Homeschooling" arc with a new creative team, interestingly both women. We've already been over how it will inevitably end, but Molly is a much cheerier mutant than the X-Men, and how can we pass that up?

#2- NYX: Wannabe

Collecting NYX #1-7 (aka Laura kinney's origin story, or why the hell do we have Girlverine) this hardcover tells us exactly how some of the other hundred thousand plus (pre M day) mutants lived while the X-Folks were livin' it up in their Weschester mansion. This is a gritty, streetsy story with the right amount of rebellionsness and dirt to make it real, but just enough powers and hormones to make it readable.

DARK AVENGERS/UNCANNY X-MEN: UTOPIA # 1

How much does that fit? A #1 is #1! And no doubt, we've got Silvestri (YES!!! SILVESTRI!!) doing art, UXM writer Fraction doing that, and three variant covers to pick from! =P! However, the beginning of Marvel's hugely hyped summer event promises things to come for the X-Men, Emma Frost, and Iron Man as well, and no summer event is complete without every bit of plot (unless you count Wolverine....and Transformers....ugh) coming together. A must-at-least-leaf-through for any Marvel or X-Men fan, and a must-buy for any completist or average joe with extra cash! And, uh, y'know, the Cyclops butt shot up there.

Happy Father's Day weekend, all! Now, this is one of those holidays that's a little underappreciated, just like out dads at times. I mean, it's got six cards, a flowery tie Buy One Get One coupon, and a 20% off Classic DC titles if you show up with your kid offer. Have you seen what they had for Mother's day? Not to diss on moms, of course, but sometimes it's just way too easy not to appreciate our dads.

Sure, yeah, they're the guys who chased that boy out with the baseball bat, they're the guys who download Weird Al Ringtones that go off at the worst of times, and the guys who say no to a two hundred dollar pair of shoes, but fork over four hundred for a set of golf clubs any day, but hey, it could be worse.

How, you ask? Have you seen the Hulk's kids? At least those four hundred dollar golf clubs don't take as much out of the budget as those pesky property damage payments! Hate having to entertain your dad's annoying poker buddies? Well, as long as he isn't playing Chess with Professor Xavier down there and fitting you for costumes while he finalizes the floor plans for your family island beach-lair, then you've got it better than Magneto's kids! Even if your dad isn't in your life too much, at least he hasn't sent you to a whole seperate universe (*cough*Cyclops*cough*).

So the point is, celebrate your dads! And if you are a dad, go take that 20% offer, buy those golf clubs, arrange your flowery tie collection by year. And remember, it could be worse...imagine having Emma Frost or Robin for a kid! At least your are nice and safe (Actually, i have no ides what Emma's dad is like, but I just needed a person!).

Another one of those new Blog Features I've been talking about. Basically, here's the top 5 books/trades you absolutely must read this week. They either come out this week, or are required reading for something else that does. Got one you think should be in future top 5's? Comment!

#5- The Wonderful Wizard of Oz #7

Okay, okay, this is an all-ages book based on that ridiculously colored movie which was based on the classic book. However, it gets an appropriate
and gorgeous update from Skottie Young, whose art style just rocks for these types of all-ages semi-hallucination fantasy books, though it might not be the best fit for the mainstream T rated stuff, like X-Men. The story isn't completely different from the original, and it's solid with a good flow.
I encourage you to at least leaf through it when you go to the shop, or wait for the trade and gift it to one lucky kid.

#4-X-Men Origins Gambit #1-

Before the inevitable destruction of out favorite New Orlean-er (what do you call 'em anyway?) happens in some movie down the line *cough* Wolverine *cough*, you can check out his origins here. I'm quite a fan of Mike Carey's, and really enjoyed his stuff on Manifest Destiny and Legacy.
He seems to have a good grip and feel for the mutants, and can deliver. David Yardin is on the art here, and he has a clean, classic, Nicola Scott-like style. So if your'e a Gambit fan, of you saw him in the movie and want some more, thank your lucky cards this comes out today!

#3-Tiny Titans #17

Look, you cannot at all be a fanboy/girl without admitting just a Little bit of love for this parody-remake of the Teen Titans as a bunch of grade school brats. This series is highly hit and miss most of the time, but does deliver some sweet chuckles for even the over-12 and over-18 crowds. At the very least, be on the lookout for preveiws and scans online of the LOL parts.

#2-The Question: The Five Books of Blood

Renee Montoya has been one of my favorite thing to come out of the ridiculous Crisis-52-Death-YearSkipping thing DC has had going on for the last little while. I especially like that she's not the "token lesbian" and is a great character in her own right. Anyway, Greg Rucka (WOO HOO!) is writing this reeks-of-Dan Brown story, and it comes with this cool cover

and an awesomely cheap pricetag!

#1-Captain America #600

Here's the token anniversary issue for you. Now, Cap really hasn't been one of my favorite characters since forever, and perhaps the only reason I know his name is because his death was on the news. I'm soooooo bored at the moment, I've watched all the internet available episode of the new Xmen cartoon, then caught the deleted ones on the lil bro's DVR. Anyone else notice some of the events being loosely based on Astonishing Xmen?

That scene where Cyclops blasts Logan out his window in ep. 1 is right out on Astonishing X-men #1 or 2 in the Gifted trade, with the exception of well....uhhhhh, no post-sex. And there's parts where Prof X says that an X-man would destroy the world, which is also in the cartoon, Storm is mentioned (she is that xman in the cartoon).

Anyways, Having a show that's as faithful to the comics as the networks will allow is totally awesome, no?

Well, Wonder Woman #25 is truly quite a peice of work. Instead of rambling on about it's awesomeness, I leave thee with several terrific lines,

Student Vote Day!

If any of you Americans even care enough to know that Canada's Federal election campaigns are also going on while yours are, well, it's just nice to know you people are informed. Hey, don't worry, all you missed was a few weeks worth of "That Guy's a moron" and "what the f**k does he know" in far more intelligent language. See below for an example, and yeah, these even run on YTV, the Canadian Nickleodeon.

Now I don't know if the following is just a gimmick to get parents to vote because the kids are doing it, but tommorrow Oct 9, is Student Vote Day, when Middle- to high School age kids actually to get to vote. Of course, our votes don't count for chickens**t, and go towards a national poll on what issues teens care about, and who we would vote for.

Personally, the Liberal Leader is horrible at speaking coherent english, and the Green party's agenda has nothing to do with any other issue but (no pun inteded) Green issues, like reducing greenhouse gases (who cares about the job cuts and poor people who can't afford solar panels). The NDP's platform looks very good, but very realistic? No. So I geuss I'm voting Conservative, or skipping the vote in the washroom or something and saying I caught the late bus. Shut up.

I made the CrossCountry team (yay me!) so it's pretty much been "Run the damn Track!" and "Do it again!" all week. Anyways, a drawing I did of my brother Gavin as Robin, because that's his favorite superhero. Stupid computer is unable to do a single, simple, damn thing i tell it to, so Robgavin is Sideways. I'm such a Nemesis hater. I mean, if Wondy honestly sees something in this guy, then obviously she needs glasses as she probably can't even see four feet in front of her. So I present to you, THE 100% NEMESIS FREE REVEIW!!

Wondy's at a movie meeting with her very, very awesome posse of gorillas,which yeah, other than the gorillas is going straight to hell. "Wondy" ends up being really ugly, dressed in a horrible bikini, and oh yeah, the lines are terrible [in the "movie"]. The scriptwriter also has some Thing goin' on between Hippolyta and Hercules, and Diana.

Frankly, I think that whoever this guy is, Judd Winick has met his match in Horrid writing.

We can't really expect Diana's taste dissapear as her eye for men seemingly has though.

I love her look in panel #3. Like awwwwwww. And, awesome gorillas.

That aside, I enjoyed this issue. Loving Gail's portrayal of how tough it really is for Hollywood to make a Wonder Woman movie. Love the beautiful art and eye-catching cover. Phenomenal writing compliments phenomenal art, and [Nemisis way, way, way aside] I really like Gail's Wonder Woman.

But then again, I'd be reading my Social Studies text with enthusiasm is she write it.

Surfing on the DC Message boards I came across a topic on wether Nightwing and Oracle (aka Dick grayson and Babs ) should be together, started by someone who's obviously not a fan of the relationship. How can you tell? Well, here's his/her start posts-

Should Dick end up with Babs? I vote no, Dick is a young man with needs a bright future. Babs is damaged goods. She can't possibly satisfy a man. Dick is better off with Starfire or Donna.

That's pretty reasonable, but it gets... erm better.

Birds of Prey #122

It's Wedensday! New Comics Day!! And reveiw one of my favorite books around day!!! As you people new to Chibis TOMB will get to know, Birds of Prey (DC) is one of my most looked-forward to pulls.

In this issue, Zatanna geusts when Manhunter's (fake, they were implanted by Visionary) memories turn into nightmares involving her son and Copperhead.

Tony Bedard, whose work on the series has been..... subpar to Mckeever and Simone so far, earns half a gold star for his use of continuity here, but I'm still waiting for him to tie up the Misfit plot he started in #118, his first issue.

Speaking of Misfit, some more new discoveries are made about her powers in 122, namely she can also teleport large objects aka Huntress's bike.

I really wonder though its been said in previous issues that Misfit can't teleport living things, would it be possible for her, with time and training, to do so? Just a thought.

Moving on now. Joker, who's the big bad for this BIRDS arc, has worked out a way to rope Oracle (who he thinks is *snicker* a "he") in. The team respond to an emergency at the local precinct, and while they do kick some ass, a tracker has been put on Lady Blackhawk that she doesn't discover until they're back to the cleverly disguised HQ.

Afraid the police will tie her team to the buissness, Oracle scatters them across the city in hopes the cops will spot them elsewhere, leaving her alone in the building. A "officer" walks into the building, and Babs suspects teh silicone Syndicate (local villians group) have tipped off the police and tries to think up excuses for the trace.

Turns out "Officer Slaughter" is about the furtheset from working with the cops as you can get.

All this is great set-up for the next Issue #123 "Face to Face Off". Both the art and the writing hold up, Helena and Zinda play off each other great, and it's all a very fun issue. There's even a panel where Huntress is taking off her shirt and there are some marks on her side, perhaps (yay continuity)

to indicate where she was shot by the Joker, but possibly just a random O'hare doodle.

My concern with the art, though Mike O'hare is an alright storyteller, is that his charachters often look too posed and stiff. this happened last issue, and it's happening again. Also, he needs to work a bit on defining the Birds.

My other concern is that in a plot like this one, where Oracle vs. Joker should be taking center stage, the secondaries crowd it and take away from that. Also, Oracle is a freakin' genius! Why the Hell does Bedard dumb her down and make her look as though she has very little control and is costantly going "why did I not think of that?"

All in All, solid, go pick it up, but nowhere near the Simone-Benes/Simone Scott days.

Thanks to someone e-mailing me the following picture of some kid's DT slip, it had to become a double post day.

I don't even know this kid, yet I admire his geekdom and bravery.

I did something similar in the seventh grade, and asked my (really) red-hulk-ish science teacher why superman could fly during some lesson about gravity, but I never got a DT for it, much less get my slip on the internet!

If you look closely, his school has chrachter points, and Anthony has got minus 10. Really, he should be getting plus 1000, with a ten taken off for endangering his family by publicly showing his secret identity. We ain't the Marvel U, kid.
